Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, and 1 Corinthians 12:28 reveal 15 spiritual gifts given to individual believers/disciples for the benefit and edification of all the Church, though I have observed individuals in the church who seem to possess a 16th gift; the gift of criticism.
They devote themselves to finding fault in an nevering ending dedication to keeping the Church on the straight and narrow. There is nothing too small or insignificant. Everything and everybody in the visible church is under constant surveillance. This is especially true of the pastor. There has never been a pastor who has received their full approval, and most haven’t even come close.
There is no one who is above their purview. A pastor who is known for his dedicated study of the Bible and is an above average communicator of God’s word, revealed to a group of pastors that his church has such a person that possesses the gift of criticism. He told them this person regularly sends him correspondence revealing fault(s) in his preaching and the construct of the worship service.
Generally, they are not inclined to offer solutions to the problems they find. They are careful to avoid such recommendations or they too might be susceptible to fault, and they can never be wrong. This is because they have a superior understanding of the Bible. Their translations, interpretations, and knowledge of Scripture is above reproach.
Their work is never done because there is a never ending list of things for which fault can be assigned. Those who possess the gift of criticism are rarely able to be joyful and they are never content, but that is the price they must pay if they are to be perfect in finding fault. Their theme song could be, “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen.”
So, do not worry about what may be or is wrong with your church. That’s being monitored.
You can be certain there is someone in your congregation who has the gift of criticism.
