Marcus Aurelius liked to remind himself that Alexander the Great and the man's mule driver are buried in the same ground. Death is not only inevitable but it is a great and merciless equalizer.
Yes death is a great equalizer, but I would argue that sin is the greater equalizer. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) “All” is everyone but one. Jesus is the one and only person who did not sin. “And you know that He (Jesus) was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.” (1 John 3:5)
All the rest of mankind, every single one of us was conceived in sin. “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. (Psalm 51:5) How then did Jesus who was conceived in a sinful woman escape the inevitable curse of sin? He was conceived by the Holy Ghost and therefore was not conceived by “Natural generation” as was the rest of mankind. “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, (Mary was a virgin) she was found with a child of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:18)
Contrary to the popular notion that children are born innocent, the Bible reveals they are rather born sinners who are under the wrath and curse of God, and their only hope is Jesus, who bore God’s wrath in their/our place. “...and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.” (Emphasis added - 1 Thessalonians 1:10)
Whether you are rich or poor, good looking or not so good looking, or whatever nationality or race you are. You are a sinner at enmity with God since the moment one of those 300 million sperms penetrated that single egg, and you will be guilty on the day of Judgement. “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment…” (Hebrews 9:27)
Christ died for us because God's wrath is set upon all those that are in their sins. We all have sinned against God and broken his commandments. We are all rebels against his rule. We have all gone our own way and have forsaken the way of righteousness. This is not a small thing to God. We may want to downplay the position our sinning has put us in, but it is an exercise in self-delusion. God is unequivocally angry with sin and he will punish sinners with his wrath and fury.
I urge you this day to believe in Jesus whom God raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from God’s wrath to come.
